Creative Uses of the New Facebook Profile

This has been going around lately, unfortunately I can't claim I knew this beforehand, seemed trivial now but I've been toying around another idea on this platform. See the image above... Now to use this simple idea for brands that I'm working on.

Invisible Light - Scissor Sisters

Weird shit, but I love it. Strangely (no pun intended), this month sees a slew of bizarre music promos. As Creative Review states: "...contains enough supernatural tomfoolery and unnecessarily exposed breasts to keep any 70s B-movie director happy..." Visions of Dario Argento, Russ Meyer and Bigas Luna come to mind.

Klaxons - Twin Flames

The Klaxons get all erotic here where flesh is as versatile as rubber, reminds me of the horror flick 'The Human Centipede'. Definitely NSFW. Directed by Saam @Partizan.

I'm afraid of no ghosts...

Are you a skeptic when it comes to the supernatural world? This site dispels all the myths, well hopefully. Get acquainted with the spooky one, tag all the places where ghosts have been sighted and share your experiences. It's called ghost tagging. And it's for those who want to avoid them can avoid them, now isn't that useful? Ironically it's the ghost month of the Chinese lunar calendar. Folklore or fiction? You decide.

Daydreaming with... James Lavelle

Dreaming with... takes place over the UK August bank holiday (August 27-30), and is the first in a series of annual festivals which aim to explore the relationship between music and art. Lavelle (aka UNKLE) is curating this first one, and will bring together works from an extensive list of his collaborators over the years, including Warren Du Preez and Nick Thornton Jones (artwork from UNKLE's latest album Where Did The Night Fall shown top), Jonathan Glazer, Futura, Ben Drury, Kai and Sunny, Oswaldo Macia, Nathan Coley, Simon Birch and Jamie Shovlin. Each artist will create a new artwork inspired by music composed for the project by UNKLE, and the music and art will be combined in the gallery space.

John Hillcoat’s video for The Answer starring Ray Winstone.

Saviours and Angels, however, is that rarest of things - a music video (or to be more precise: a short film set to music) that has been thought over as much as the track(s) it showcases, and can be viewed entirely independently, brimming with artistic merit of its own as it is. The three parts, directed by Paul Andrew Wilson, fit together to form a short film triptych that provides a relentlessly bleak look at urban alienation in Britain, in which each segment features an exclusive UNKLE song.

There are also three new UNKLE tracks which are featured can be downloaded for free.

Matthew Dear - Black City

Matthew Dear's latest long player. What's interesting is his third studio release, Ghostly International proudly introduces its newest label release format, the totem. More than a mere limited edition, the totem is a proposal, an entreaty to listeners everywhere to reconsider our relationship to music in the digital era. In producing an object as the embodiment of Black City, Matthew Dear and Ghostly International suggest a new path through which one's physical relationship to an album is again explored.

Lunar: Checkpoint Abra USB drive

Sandisk recently commissioned the design firm Lunar to develop a new secure USB flash drive. The thumb drive also features check point virtualization that gives mobile workers access to files and applications from anywhere and at anytime.

Lunar’s design team set out to create an impenetrable monolith that would communicate the device’s secure features. The design is comprised of a seamless cast mtal casing that has a concealed extension mechanism for retracting the USB key. When closed, the key appears to be solid with no apparent means of entry. Smartly designed and executed.

Dior’s Lady Blue Shanghai

Directed by David Lynch, with Marion Cotillard, the film takes place in Shanghai. Dior approached Lynch asking him to make a film for the internet, anyway he wanted it just had to have the Dior bag, the Pearl Tower and Old Shanghai. Not knowing what the Pearl Tower was, Lynch discovered that the building was inspired by a poem about pearls falling on jade. Watching this, there are so many Lynchian elements, dreamscapes, the blurring between imagination and reality, the beautiful weepy heroine, and the blue rose.

Live On

“Live On” is a social awareness movement that embraces potential donors, recipients and their respective families. For donors, it is an expression of the renewed life that a donor can bestow on someone else; to recipients, it is the expression of hope fulfilled. The movement will also promote altruistic living organ transplantation. “Live On” goes beyond educating the public about the Human Organ Transplant Act (HOTA) as it aims to build up societal consciousness and acceptance of organ donation as an acceptable, generous act of goodness after one's death.

So calling all aspiring film-makers, if you are between 15 to 25 and have a love for films, join us at the launch of the Live On Film Competition on 26th May, 3pm at Lasalle College of the Arts. You can hear from notable local directors and filmmakers including Royston Tan, as they share with you more about the competition. Please support this worthy cause.

Passarella Death Squad

Passarella Death Squad serves up another splendid collection. Passarella Death Squad was started in London by Danny Broddle and Emilie Albisser in 2004. One quality I like about the label is that they import their fabric from Tokyo, Japan and manufacture the garments in London.

Passarella Death Squad is also signed to The Republic of Desire recordings, this is a talented trio. Their musical arm is the result of a wide range of influences from classic artists such as Cocteau Twins, PIL and The Velvet Underground through to more recent visionaries such as LFO, DJ Hell and label boss (ex Micronaut) George Issakidis which results in a hugely individual sound.

All Back To Mine | 17 April 2010

All Back To Mine | 17 April 2010
An eclectic selection
-
'All Back To Mine' is a monthly bar night-out where we dig deeper into the depths of our eclectic music collection; inspired by compilations from 'Back To Mine', 'The Trip', 'DJ-Kicks' & 'Late Night Tales'. Not bowing down into the rigid genrefication of music, there's a lot of playfulness, upfront rhythms, emotion and warmth running through our selection with a delightful nod to the future, past and present.

So roundup your mates, lovers, flings, colleagues, siblings; grab plenty of drinks and make yourself comfortable as I indulgently playout y(our) favourite tunes.

Land Peel

By necessity, the Japanese have an intuition for space-saving design that shines in their products and architecture. But this concept might be one of the cleverest. Created by Shin Yamashita, a student at the Kyoto Institute of Technology, Land Peel is a foam floor covering which also has panels that flip up and fold, to become any sort of furniture you might need: From a table, to a backrest, to a drink tray, to a footrest, to a pillow. Now, that's minimalism at its maximum.

Logorama

6 years in the making, Logorama explores the extent to which logos are embedded in our daily existence. Said members of H5, "Logorama presents us with an over-marketed world built only from logos and real trademarks that are destroyed by a series of natural disasters (including an earthquake and a tidal wave of oil)."

"Logotypes are used to describe an alarming universe (similar to the one that we are living in) with all the graphic signs that accompany us everyday in our lives. This over-organized universe is violently transformed by the cataclysm becoming fantastic and absurd. It shows the victory of the creative against the rational, where nature and human fantasy triumph."

Suit up or dress down, these kicks are versatile. Taking a break from its heavily Native American inspired themes, the Japanese label has meticulously crafted a pair of loafer sneakers, the Abarth Moc Denim Folk, that is dressy without being pretentious and tired, casual without being unkempt and lazy. Mr. Nakamura, we're gonna be so broke.
