The Generic Man

Originally founded in 1997 in a NYC loft by Kevin Carney, the Generic Man collection came about in 2006, as Brandon Day and Kevin Carney began what they call “a case study in adultism”, a journey to define what it means to be an “adult” these days. Through a process of research, experience and discussion ‘the generic man’ lifestyle of the “Newdult” took shape.

And there's Generic Surplus, developed by The Generic Man, the foundation of Generic Surplus is proven shapes and clean, simple, refined lines. Creating classic American sneakers to complete a look or to be worn everyday as a personal standard.

Featured here is the Sportsman Low-top series (top) and the Wing-tip series (bottom) from Generic Surplus, lovely.

Depeche Mode: Remastered

It just occurred to me that I had unintentionally forgotten all about them, and how could I? Amidst all the DJs/producers around the globe and the occasional but absurd categorization/genres of electronic 'dance' music, DM still remains unfazed to be pigeon-holed. Sifting through my shelf, I still hold this collection dearly. It's no surprise that iTunes unleashed the 'The Complete Depeche Mode' digital boxset 2 years ago. And with their output spanning over 20 years, it's amazing to see how they managed to pull through despite the struggles within the band.

Well, It's never too late to grab their past and present material, it's a strange love really...

Eboman

"At this time, I was not yet aware of musical styles. My involvement with music was not yet that serious. I was more interested in playing around with sound fragments and effects, in order to create my own (musical) world. Everything went into the mixer with this in mind: Eddy Murphy films, episodes of the Muppet Show, the news, hip hop, acid, the moon landing, the Pixies, noise, Rick Astley: anything. I was enjoying the freedom of sampling."

Sample madness, literally.

Peter Saville

Peter Hook & Peter Saville, together with Ben Kelly & Miranda Sawyer talks about the Hacienda & the Adidas-Y3 Hacienda collab sneakers.

"When I give a talk in Tokyo or wherever and people come up and say, 'I want to become a graphic designer because of your work', I apologise. That spirit of independent thinking in Factory or, for instance, at Yohji Yamamoto was the exception and never the rule. I am the worst type of model for a design career." Having said that, Peter has nevertheless influenced and has made a significant contribution to the industry. Saville's strategy has always been to consider both the product and its market, and, like any good art director, to look for a visual solution that works for both. What sets him apart, however, is the breadth of his frame of visual reference, which takes in everything from fine art and architecture to fashion and film.

His website is still under progress, we shall see more of it soon.

RIAA Issues Knock Muxtape Offline

The popular mix sharing site Muxtape has been taken offline so that administrators can "sort out a problem with the RIAA," according to a note that appears on the site. "For the past several months, we have communicated concerns to Muxtape on behalf of our members," said an RIAA spokesman via email. "Muxtape has not yet obtained authorization from our member companies to host or stream copies of their sound recordings."

One of our top ten favorite music websites, Muxtape's service keeps the mixtape concept alive by allowing anyone to post a mix of up to 12 songs that can be easily shared with a simple URL. Its interface consists of artist and song titles presented in large fonts, with "buy" links under each song... [ More ]

April 77

Jeanswear label April 77 is looking to turn its rock 'n roll aesthetic into a vinyl reality with the launch of its own label, April 77 Records.

Founder Brice Partouche has never made the brand's roots a secret. He's always seen April 77 more as an attitude or a lifestyle than simply a fashion label, and his obsession with bands such as The Ramones and The Attractions has informed 77's unique look from the outset, inspiring jean models such as the super-skinny "Joey" and the straight-leg "Costello." In fact, each pair of jeans comes equipped for an impromptu strum session, with a pick fitted in its very own pocket. As Brice himself puts it, "We used to be about music, now we are music."

Alva Noto + Ryuichi Sakamoto - Insen

With "insen", Alva Noto (aka Carsten Nicolai) and Ryuichi Sakamoto continue their collaboration which started with "vrioon". The debut album released on Raster-Noton in 2003 was voted 'Record of the Year 2004' in the electronica category by British magazine 'The Wire'. A particular interest was shown in Nicolai’s creation towards a new synergy of acoustic piano and digital post production that had not witnessed before, in his approach and interpretation of Sakamoto’s piano clusters.
