Daydreaming with... James Lavelle

Dreaming with... takes place over the UK August bank holiday (August 27-30), and is the first in a series of annual festivals which aim to explore the relationship between music and art. Lavelle (aka UNKLE) is curating this first one, and will bring together works from an extensive list of his collaborators over the years, including Warren Du Preez and Nick Thornton Jones (artwork from UNKLE's latest album Where Did The Night Fall shown top), Jonathan Glazer, Futura, Ben Drury, Kai and Sunny, Oswaldo Macia, Nathan Coley, Simon Birch and Jamie Shovlin. Each artist will create a new artwork inspired by music composed for the project by UNKLE, and the music and art will be combined in the gallery space.

Saviours and Angels, however, is that rarest of things - a music video (or to be more precise: a short film set to music) that has been thought over as much as the track(s) it showcases, and can be viewed entirely independently, brimming with artistic merit of its own as it is. The three parts, directed by Paul Andrew Wilson, fit together to form a short film triptych that provides a relentlessly bleak look at urban alienation in Britain, in which each segment features an exclusive UNKLE song.

There are also three new UNKLE tracks which are featured can be downloaded for free.

Peter Saville’s ‘Erotic House’ of Pop

SHOWstudio is streaming LIVE from a very interesting photoshoot this afternoon. “As backdrop to an editorial story for July 2009's Wallpaper* magazine, Peter Saville’s febrile imagination constructs an imaginary ‘Erotic House’ of Pop perversity, sexualising an entire post-modern environment and fetishing furniture, fashion and flesh alike.” There's a live feed and you can follow their Twitter feed for more updates. From Tuesday April 28 to Thursday April 30, including interviews with Saville and Knight.

Adventures of the Stardust Girl

“Adventures of the Stardust Girl” is a striking campaign for Polish fashion label, Reserved, comprising a video trailer in a 70’s science fiction movie style and a flash website laid out as an interactive print fashion story. Beautifully photographed by Marcin Tyszka.

U2 & Taylor Deupree double-take?

Both album covers were inspired by Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto, but Taylor blatantly said that U2 was ripping them off. Afterwards, he commented that he shouldn’t have said “ripoff” because that implies intent. And both covers are similar and being based on the same photograph which both parties had legal rights to use, so what’s the beef? Gregory Crewson

New York based Gregory Crewson is probably one of the most well-known and influential photographers working in the US today. Focusing frequently on the American suburban landscape, his carefully composed and dramatically lit photographs present strangely disquieting views of everyday life that one critic has described as being like a “demented Norman Rockwell.” Crewdson makes rather then takes his photographs, exposing the dreams, anxieties, fears, and desires that underlie everyday life.

"My practice is concerned with exploring the fascination that the British public has with American popular culture and the sub-cultural world of fandom. In the images, I have shown people in their own homes and environments wearing costumes that they would be dressed in to attend events with other like-minded individuals. It seeks to offer a glimpse into seemingly ordinary lives of my subjects and allows the private to become public. The work hints at the depth of people's fantasies and the methods they employ to adopt this culture as part of their own lifestyle as a means of escapism."

Dimitri Mavrikis

In memory of Dimitri Mavrikis (1959-2004)

Born in Montreal, he moved to Greece at the age of 9 where he spent his formative years immersed in his culture. He developed a passion and appreciation for the arts and in particular a love of photography. When he returned to Canada, this passion allowed him to find success as a fashion photographer. Recent clients included Harpers Bazaar, Italian Marie Claire and German Vogue.
